  5. Omnium Gatherum

In preparation for its tour of the United Kingdom in 2011, Brass Band of Central Florida (BBCF) endeavoured to design a series of concerts that would surprise, delight and challenge its audiences while still paying homage to the great British brass band tradition. In so doing, BBCF brought its considerable talents to bear on the widest array of musical styles and genres possible. The result is this recording and its unique title. Indeed, the title also represents what a brass band is at its most basic level. More than any other musical ensemble, a brass band is a unique musical organisation, possessing a miscellaneous collection of people who bring a world of experience and talent to the group from every direction fathomable. What a wonderful foundation from which to make musical art! It is hoped this recording serves to show all the sides and colours this ensemble is capable of while being a truly enjoyable listening experience. No matter what your musical preference, there is something here for everyone.

  6. Celebration

Fountain City Brass Band was formed in 2002 and celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2007. It was also the year that saw the band rocket to the forefront of American banding with its first contesting victories, claiming victory at the North American Brass Band Association Championships and the US Open Brass Band Championships, with record setting performances at each.

It was also the year of the band's first tour of the United Kingdom. This saw the band give performances throughout the country, highlighted by its appearance at the All England Masters International Championship and the Whit Friday march contests. For both of these competitions, Fountain City Brass Band was the first American band to ever compete and achieved excellent results.

While in England, Fountain City Brass Band also had the opportunity to share a concert and subsequent evening with the Bolton Youth Band. For many in Fountain City Brass Band, this was their first chance to hear a truly fantastic youth brass band and that evening was one of the great inspirations that led Fountain City Brass Band to begin work to form its own youth band.

2007 also saw Fountain City Brass Band record this album although not produced until 2010. All of the music contained on this recording is dear to the band for very special reasons, and all of it in some way played its part in this memorable year. With such a project crowning what was a fantastic year for the band, there could be no more fitting title for this recording to laud the band's many achievements and its high hopes for the future.

  7. Over the Rainbow

The line from the classic Harold Arlen tune, Over the Rainbow, has indeed proven to be true for the Fountain City Brass Band. After winning both the North American Brass Band Association Championships and the U.S. Open Brass Band Championships three years in a row, the Fountain City Brass Band was fortunate enough to launch a tour that would go down in banding history.

As winners of the 2008 U.S. Open, the band was invited to compete in the following year's Brass in Concert Championship, as well as to give numerous concerts and youth workshops throughout the United Kingdom, record its second album and be the first American band to compete in the Scottish Open Championship. It was a lengthy trip that saw the band overseas during the American holiday of Thanksgiving which, being away from their homes and families, was spent as comfortably as possible in a castle-turned resort.

A few days after this, the band's dreams really did come true when the Fountain City Brass Band became the first American band to win a top level brass band competition in the UK with its victory at the Scottish Open. Aptly enough, their choice for this performance was Bertrand Moren's thrilling composition Dreams that also garnered the best soloist prize on the day for one of the founding members of the band, trombonist William Hess.

Given this remarkable success, that the future seems brighter than ever and that the band itself hails from Kansas, the Fountain City Brass Band has titled this recording Over the Rainbow

  13. Fireworks

During its historic days, when it was held at Belle View, the British Open Brass Band Championship maintained a traditional approach to the choice of test pieces. The reputation for musical innovation rested with the National Brass Band Championships in London. In 1975 however, this all changed when Harry Mortimer commissioned Elgar Howarth to compose the test-piece. Three years earlier, Elgar Howarth had accepted an invitation to become Musical Advisor to Grimethorpe Colliery Band and immediately began to explore new repertoire opportunities, often involving contemporary composers he had worked with as a professional trumpet player and conductor.

In writing Fireworks,  Howarth took as his model Benjamin Britten's 'Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra' and also provided narration (not recorded on this CD) which offers an introduction to the instruments, sound and character of the brass band. The composition certainly provided its own fireworks in the conservative brass band genre as it proved to be a controversial work, for two reasons. Firstly, it made huge demands on the percussion section which itself had only just been admitted to the brass band contest arena and secondly, the musical language with strong elements of parody and irony, moments of high dissonance and irregular rhythms came as something of a shock to players and audiences used to lyrical melody and traditional harmony. It would be true to say that brass band music was changed forever by Fireworks

The CD also contains three cornet solos played by the Swedish trumpet star, Hakan Harkenberger all of which are first ever recordings.
