This music is offered as a successor to ‘Celestial Morn’, although the style is vastly different. The comique and slight burlesque aspects of the instruments are exploited, but the music is meant to ‘laugh’ its way through moods of radiant joy, as befits the relaxed happiness of the chorus ‘Walking in the light’ on which the work is based.
To widen the use of the piece, several permutations of the soloists’ parts have been arranged and are available as follows: These parts are not shown on the score but are based on the original soloists parts.
• Duet for Eb and Bb Basses (as printed)
• Duet for Eb Basses (1 and 2)
• Duet for Euphonium and Eb Bass (2)
• Duet for Euphonium and Bb Bass
• Solo for Eb Bass (telescoping both duettists’ melodic parts)
Based on the West Indian style chorus ‘Walking in the light;, the music ‘laughs’ its way through moods of radiant joy, punctuated by a slower and more wistful movement. Other brief sunshine references in the work are ‘Travel along in the sunshine’ and ‘Marching on in the light of God’ (‘A robe of white’)
