  1. The Lure of the Red Jacket

Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year 2011.

After the release of his first solo CD in 2005 (on which he performed on every instrument in the band, and sang too!) it was always Glyn's intention that a more 'serious' direction would be taken with any subsequent project. The commissioning of a euphonium concerto from Andy Scott turned out to be the catalyst that turned intention into reality.

  2. Fandango

Fandango is a recording that demonstrates the spirit and vitality of the euphonium. The popularity of this wonderful instrument is continuing to grow worldwide. Steven Mead is perhaps the best known euphonium soloist in the world today and he enjoys an international reputation as an outstanding soloist and an innovative and inspirational teacher. On this disc, we hear some brand new music for the instrument in addition to a couple of well-loved classics.

  3. Dreaming of the Masters

British Bandsman and 4barsrest Solo CD of the Year 2011.

This project began a few years ago at a festival in Italy where I first met the legendary tuba soloist and conductor James Gourlay. He suggested collaborating and set this project in motion. My first performance with Foden's Band was made possible five years earlier by my good friend and brass enthusiast extraordinaire, Philip Biggs. So when James suggested the possibility of using the same group to record this CD, I jumped at the opportunity.

Foden's has long been considered one of the world's greatest groups in the storied tradition of the brass band genre. This was intentionally designed as a crossover project between North American style playing and the classic sound of a true British brass band. Doing a recording of original material requiring stylistic flexibility and unparalleled virtuosity would need the perfect band...a band like Foden's.

  7. Moto Perpetuo

British Bandsman, 4barsrest and Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year 2010.

Since the euphonium (meaning sweet sound) was 'invented' by Adolphe Sax, there has always been a distinguished tradition of euphonium soloists, Simone Mantia of the Sousa Band being the grandfather of them all.

A quarter of a century ago one could literally count the serious euphonium repertoire on one hand; euphoniumists were hard pressed to expand beyond the familiar crop of 'air with variations' solos and slow melodies extending back to the 19th century. It is still rather hard to believe that the first euphonium concerto was composed as late as 1972, by Joseph Horovitz. Since then, both the euphonium and its repertoire have been in perpetual motion.

David Childs unquestionably stands squarely in the line of this great tradition as this album amply demonstrates. Moto Perpetuo may as well be the description of David's career; he scarcely seems to have time to draw breath with his busy schedule of commissions and performances. His two performances of the Karl Jenkins concerto in the celebrated Carnegie Hall, New York at each end of March 2010 (with orchestra and wind ensemble) epitomise and celebrate the very considerable impact that this star player has already made.

As evidenced on this album, David continues to raise the bar in a musical journey of perpetual motion flowing from the title track through a series of solos celebrating the life and work of the hugely popular Welsh composer Karl Jenkins and culminating in his Euphonium Concerto of 2009. The journey also takes in the finales of two other 21st century concerti (by Cosma and Meechan) as well as the deeply reflective Oration by Howard Snell. The album closes with an American double-tribute to that 19th century tradition and a final track that takes us out of this world!

  11. Double Trouble

The production of Double Trouble celebrates what can be achieved when true collaboration across musical genres, composers and performers is allowed to develop and blossom. The bringing together of Andy Scott, Barbara Thompson, Les Neish, James Gourlay, Tubalaté, Jim Fieldhouse and Foden's Band has produced this quite unique recording.

Having originally written her Tuba Concerto for James Gourlay and big-band, jazz saxophonist, flautist and composer Barbara Thompson had the opportunity to hear Andy Scott's Salt of the Earth performed by Les Neish and Foden's Band and was immediately taken with the thought of a re-scoring of her original work, with brass band accompaniment. Jim Fieldhouse, a member of Andy Scott's SaxAssault saxophone ensemble and euphonium player with Hepworth Band, was approached and produced a fine arrangement of the work for Foden's and the recording project started to take shape.

Add to the mix the magnificent Tubalaté (and drummer Ben Gray) with Andy Scott's Bite the Bullet and Going Down, written for James Gourlay with experimental tuba sampling, the only gap in the programme was a joint work that would highlight the immense technical and musical talents of two great tuba virtuosi. The title track, Double Trouble, is exactly that vehicle. Framed at the start and finish by Foden's Band, Barbara Thompson has penned a musical tour de force that pushes and stretches even these two great exponents of the tuba.

All in all, this recording serves as a testament to what can be crafted, nurtured and enjoyed when the coming together of creative minds and fabulous musicianship is allowed to simply enjoy itself.

  12. Virtuoso Music for Brass - Jules Demersseman

Jules (Auguste Edouard) Demersseman (1833-1866) was in his time a remarkable flautist and meritorious composer. Historically the most important works he composed were those for the new trombone with six independent valves developed by Adolphe Sax. The music of Jules Demersseman is certainly unknown to brass players at present, but this recording of his 'lost' works for the now extinct six valve trombone is sure to put his music into the minds of brass players now. It is wonderfully inventive and spontaneous music which tests the ability of even today's players. How these virtuoso pieces were played on the trombone with six independent valves we just don't know, it seems too remarkable for words!

  13. Trumpet Renaissance

Philippe Schartz is one of the most exciting trumpeters about today. He has developed a highly successful career as an orchestral and chamber musician as well as a soloist. As Principal Trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (until summer 2002) and in his student days with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra he has performed, to much critical acclaim, with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez and Bernard Haitink. His solo career includes many recitals and concertos all over Europe as well as four solo CD recordings.

In this contemporary programme, Schartz explores some of the most thrilling concertos in the trumpet repertoire in a combination of very different original compositions.

Birtwistle's 1987 score Endless Parade was composed following an encounter with a festive parade in the medieval Italian town of Lucca, and the various aural perspectives afforded by meeting the jostling procession at different junctures. Critic Rian Evans writes, 'the exquisite poise that Birtwistle achieves was certainly realised... with Schartz's brilliant playing rivalling that of its first executor, Hardenberger.'

In stark constrast Pietà by German composer Christian Jost emphasizes the different sound qualities of the trumpet. This is a strong link and stunning lament to the style of the late jazz trumpeter Chet Baker, and the work is dedicated to him. The 1938 Concerto Grosso No.1 by Kurt Roger is one of the earliest twentieth-century concertos and a gem for the original trumpet repertoire. Both works receive their premiere recording.

Concerto by Alexander Arutiuinian completes the programme and is the most famous of all the music recorded. Schartz had the opportunity to study the concerto with Timofei Dokschitzer, who gave the first performance of 'this wonderfully energetic and charismatic jewel of a trumpet concerto. It is the perfect showcase for my instrument and the music displays lyrical and technical prowess.' Philippe Schartz

Philippe Schartz is accompanied by his own orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, under one of Netherland's most active and energetic conductors, Jac van Steen.

  16. Salt of the Earth

British Bandsman, 4barsrest and Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year 2009.

"If ever there was a convincing advocate of the tuba, it's Les. His playing reaches out from the stage, picks you up by the scruff of the neck and says 'listen to me'." Stephanie Hughes (BBC Radio)

"The player who most reminds me of John Fletcher today is Les Neish." Bramwell Tovey (Music Director, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra)

Les Neish has become one of the leading tuba players of his generation. His endeavours have gained him recognition as a soloist, chamber musician and educator throughout the world.

He gained a First Class Honours degree, Professional Performance Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music and, following graduation, was taken onto the RNCM staff as a chamber music coach and tuba tutor in the Junior School. He was the first ever tuba player to be awarded the Worshipful Company of Dyers Award for Wind and Brass at the Royal Overseas League Competition and he gave the first solo tuba recital at The Bridgewater Hall Manchester.

This recording is a snapshot of the different styles of music that Les has performed in concerts and recitals over the years culminating in the title track, Salt of the Earth by Andy Scott. Salt of the Earth was composed for Les and Foden's Band with funds made available from the BBC Fame Academy Education Bursary and Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of the composer's success in winning the Wind Band and Brass Band section of the British Composer Awards 2006. The World Premiere performance was given by Les and Foden's Band at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass in January 2008.

  19. Katrina

Katrina Marzella is one of the most exciting young brass talents to emerge from the UK in recent years. She has gathered an impressive array of accolades during her youth and is now regarded as a celebrated artist in her own right. Katrina was the Scottish Schools Solo Champion for five consecutive years (1997 to 2001) and in 2004 she won both the Scottish Youth and Open Solo Championships, the first person in 30 years to hold both titles simultaneously. Also in 2004, Katrina won the inaugural BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist competition and in 2005, became the only brass player to be awarded a BBC Fame Academy Bursary. In 2006, Katrina won the British Open Solo Championship and was subsequently invited to represent the UK at the 2007 Ern Keller International Soloist of the Year competition in Sydney which she also won. Katrina repeated this feat at the 2007 and 2008 events respectively thereby completing a unique 'double-double'.

The award of the BBC Fame Academy Bursary gave Katrina Marzella an exciting opportunity to help develop the solo repertoire of the Baritone. This CD includes the premiere recording of one of the resultant works, Concerto for Baritone by Martin Ellerby.

  20. The Arban Collection II

These pieces have been the source of pleasure, instruction, entertainment and not a little frustration to seven or more generations of players. What a good idea, then, to record them. Such an enterprise calls for a brave player, and here Russell Gray displays a command of cornet technique, which has rarely if ever been displayed on record since the Mackintosh recordings of the 1930s.
