  6. Long, Long Ago

Brass bands had a very successful period during the era of the LP (sepcially from the mid 1960s onwards) with many of the top labels of the time (EMI, Decca, Polydor, Pye and Fontana), as well as a number of smaller labels, all taking a keen interest. This album of solos, originally recorded for LP release between 1958 and 1973, reflects that interest but, equally, sets out to portray the principal players that graced the best brass bands of the time.

Philip Cobb is undoubtedly one of the finest trumpet players of his generation and as Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, in succession to Maurice Murphy, continues an outstanding heritage. 19. Soloist Showcase

If there was a worldwide brass band Hall of Fame, there would be a great array of former principal players of the Black Dyke Band amongst its membership, great names of the past who have attained legendary status. Today, the band's 'hot seats' retain the same magical appeal and are much sought after. This fact is made manifest on the band's Soloist Showcase disc, featuring all the principal players displaying their superlative talents with musicality, rich tone and wondrous technique. Each section of the band is also showcased along with some of the younger players, all of which adds a splendid variety to the programme. The tracks progress, with slight variation, in a concert seating formation starting with cornets and ending with percussion.
