  3. Cross Flourishes

The idea of a recording was first talked about at the historic gala concert after the The National Brass Band Championships in 1997. It was the first time Black Dyke Band and The International Staff Band, performed together at the Royal Albert Hall.

The trombone sections became instant friends and it wasn’t long before the Black Dyke trombone quartet was officially formed. This CD is a collaboration of the trombone sections from both Black Dyke Band and The ISB. Profits from the making of this recording go to Air Ambulance.

  4. Larsson in Brass

"The CD title is accurate, for on the disc my melodies originally scored for voice and piano are rendered in brass – thanks to a series of gifted brass arrangers. There are many such arrangements based wholly or partly on my music in the Army’s brass repertoire, and it has been fascinating to work with Stephen Cobb to whittle them down to a manageable number that would also allow space for new items to be featured."

  8. The Adventurers

Since 1904, The International Staff Band has had a critical role in the selection of the 'best music' for SA bands across the globe. In that year the band first began to play for the International Music Board pieces being considered for publication. Imagine the responsibility of the Staff Bandmaster and the band in giving careful regard year in and year out to both humble and outstanding submissions, knowing that their reading probably determined the fate of any given piece. The repertoire contained on this disc primarily highlights new works by the rising generation of SA composers within the United Kingdom, pieces endorsed by the ISB and its director. During Stephen Cobb's exemplary years of service as Staff Bandmaster - 21 to date - he has taken particular care in nurturing of homegrown talent.

Some of the works recorded here featured in the band's recent endeavours, including the Boundless International Congress in the summer of 2015 and their tour of Australia in October of the same year. However, as a reading of these notes will underscore, a good number of the pieces saw light of day as commissions, tributes and celebratory works of various kind not only in the UK but also across the SA world. Appropriately, the programme begins with the brilliant paean, My God and King! that ISB member Paul Sharman wrote for the Melbourne Staff Band. The festive work has as its textual basis the well-known Antiphon hymn of George Herbert, set to the hymn tune Luckington. That hymn states multiple times: 'Let all the world in every corner sing: My God and King.'

  17. Heritage Series Vol. 5 - Music from the 1970s

The 1950s and 1960s evidenced new trends, and whilst in the preceeding 90 years of Salvation Army instrumental publication contributions were continually received from all parts of the world, the 1970s saw a surge of new scores from the USA. Whilst some established regular contributors were fading from the scene, material was coming through from new composers whose work gave immense promise. In the ensuing years, it has become clear that much of that promise has been wonderfully fulfilled.

Disc 1 consists of new recordings while Disc 2 is compiled from previous recordings by The International Staff Band.

  20. Heritage Series Vol. 4 - Music from the 1960s

To select representative works for this Double CD was no easy assignment. Indeed, the problem of choice was what to leave out and it would not be difficult to produce further and deserving track lists!

Disc 1 consists of new recordings, three large-scale works being balanced by a series of smaller items which could well have been heard at many a local centre during a Sunday's worship and praise gatherings. Disc 2 is compiled from previous recordings by The International Staff Band, conducted by Stephen Cobb.

  21. Heritage Series Vol. 3 - Music from the 1950s

Post-World War Two, The Salvation Army music scene had an air of optimism. Whilst some United Kingdom corps had benefitted from nearby service camps, most had suffered depletion. Getting back to normality must have been even more difficult in occupied countries. So, by and large, there was a renaissance which led a heady time for many bands. In Britain, radio was allocating generous time to brass banding which included The Salvation Army.  Recordings recommenced, and improved travel made tour possibilities at home and overseas more widespread. Audiences were open to new ideas and band programmes were popular.

From a repertoire viewpoint, the Festival Series recommenced with new composers appearing on programmes and sheet music. Established names like George Marshall, Bramwell Coles and many others continued to produce, although at the start of the 1950s Erik Leidzén and Eric Ball were not contributing. The International Staff Bandmaster at the time, Major Bernard Adams, enthusiastically encouraged new writers. On the crest of renewal, the 1950s amassed a large store of 'immediate' music, much of which was capable of survival. During thet decade, both Eric Ball and Erik Leidzén returned with works like Sanctuary and Concertino for Band and Trombone respectively. Eric Ball's ground-breaking symphonic variations The Old Wells was followed by Ray Steadman-Allen's Go down, Moses. The eminent composer Ralph Vaughan Williams had penned Prelude on Three Welsh Hymn Tunes. These are just the tip of the iceberg!

Dr. Stephen Cobb's problem of choice for this disc has been more of what to omit rather than what to include but he has come up with a good representation.

  23. Heritage Series Vol. 2 - Music from the 1940s

During the war years which dominated the 1940s, causing huge numbers of Salvation Army Bands personnel to be displaced, SA bands continued to function, albeit largely on a restricted basis and with help from locally posted servicemen. Publication of Salvation Army brass band music was maintained with the exception of the Festival Series which was put on hold. Publishing policy of the day was to present balanced journals, and in so doing quite a stock of manuscripts had been built by the late 1930s. Stylistically there was little in the way of fresh approach but new voices began to be heard which promised idiomatic advance. At the same time there were good things coming from the more established writers.

Dr. Stephen Cobb's choice of music for this disc has been no easy task and no doubt others could suggest enough personal favourites to fill more CDs. What is presented here however, is an excellent cross-section of a period on the verge of change which subsequently gathered momentum.
