  3. Landscapes

"Ever since beginning my work as Musical Director of Cory Band in 2012 I have wanted to devote some time and energy to recording some of the classics of our genre; some of the pieces which have proved to be ground-breaking in the development of original music for brass bands; some of the cornerstones of our repertoire. Moreover, I wanted to be able to present them in an appealing way, making connections between music of different eras, and curating collections of pieces which might intrigue and delight the listener, encouraging new discovery and deeper appreciation." - Philip Harper

Three major works have been written for or premièred by me. The fourth, Dr Denis Wright’s Cornet Concerto, revisits the very first Cornet Concerto written for the legendary Harry Mortimer." - Richard Marshall

  13. European Brass Band Championships 2019

Over 41 years of the European Brass Band Championships, the contest has become a unique pinnacle of competitive brass banding and has been hosted in some breathtaking cities. EBBC is a week long celebration of banding - including workshops, demonstrations, concerts, and of course the contests themselves. EBBC 2019 was hosted in Montreux's Stravinski Auditiorium and saw many bands arriving in Switzerland with the hopes of taking the title of 'European Brass Band Champions'. This included the world's number one brass band, Cory Band, with Philip Harper.

The European Brass Band Championships is a chance to listen to bands from all over Europe come together and perform a variety of pieces, from old classics to the unveiling of brand new pieces, whilst also each playing a technical set test piece. This highlights album pulls together a taste of the whole event, including performances from the Championship, Challenge and Youth Sections as well as the Gala Concert featuring Valaisia Brass Band.

  14. Trials & Triumphs

Three dates across a two-year period tell the story of this album:

    Sunday 17 April 2016, Wednesday 6 September 2017 and Saturday 6 October 2018.

The fire in 2016 at the band’s rehearsal premises has been well documented, together with the loss of the library and so many historical artefacts and items of memorabilia. In this same year Foden’s was successful with an application to Arts Council England through ‘Grants for the Arts’ for a “Three Year Strategic Music and Audience Development Plan 2016-2019”.

Included in the funding application was a commission from Derek Bourgeois to celebrate the famous double hat-trick of wins achieved by Foden’s at the National Championship of Great Britain 1932, 33 & 34 and again in 1936, 37 & 38. This piece, a celebration of everything to do with brass band contests, proved to be the last major work for brass band that Bourgeois wrote before he passed away in September 2017. The following months saw many logistical problems overcome, new rehearsal premises secured, all whilst fulfilling the band’s busy engagement diary. Having come through all the “Trials”, Saturday 6 October 2018 saw the band’s ultimate “Triumph”, being crowned National Champion Band of Great Britain.

This album then is a musical representation of two years in the life of the band.

  15. The Pilgrim's Progress

This most recent album of music by Philip Wilby is being issued in a year of celebrations; the composer’s 70th birthday falls within it, and it also marks Nicholas Childs’ impressive 100th recording with Black Dyke Band. In addition, there are broader musical preoccupations, whose subject matter may be summarised as comprising ‘English Music with American Connections’

  16. Spotlight

In essence, this album is a blending of the old and the new; tradition and progress; the expected and unexpected, all infused together under one bright Spotlight. It includes the ubiquitous and much-loved solo works I have performed with Black Dyke over the years, as well as showcasing new material – substantial, important and serious works for the baritone horn, now firmly footed without apology in the soloist’s limelight.

  17. Summon the Heroes

With the dawn of 2019 Cory Band was, for the 12th consecutive year, pronounced to be the number one ranked brass band in the world – reason enough on its own for the title of this, the band’s latest album, to evoke images of conquering stars on the global stage.

Following the success in 2016 of the band’s CD Musicals, which won the “British Bandsman Light Music CD of the Year” award, The Household Troops Band is pleased to present a second volume of music from the musicals genre, featuring more music for all to enjoy.

Salvation Army Bands today feature a wide range of music - fairly recently the Salvation Army published new Christmas Carol Books for Bands, which sees many bands playing traditional carols alongside music from artists such as Wizzard, Slade and other secular tunes. The Household Troops Band is no exception, and has for some years featured a mix of religious and secular tunes as it attracted people to listen to the band outdoors. Over the years, several people have attended the Salvation Army for the first time having heard the band in the afternoon, and later enjoyed a more traditional Salvation Army Band festival including music, scripture and prayer. The band has a policy of “music without barriers”, using music in context, and as part of a whole programme aimed to proclaim the Gospel to all who hear them.
