    Trials & Triumphs

Three dates across a two-year period tell the story of this album:

    Sunday 17 April 2016, Wednesday 6 September 2017 and Saturday 6 October 2018.

The fire in 2016 at the band’s rehearsal premises has been well documented, together with the loss of the library and so many historical artefacts and items of memorabilia. In this same year Foden’s was successful with an application to Arts Council England through ‘Grants for the Arts’ for a “Three Year Strategic Music and Audience Development Plan 2016-2019”.

Included in the funding application was a commission from Derek Bourgeois to celebrate the famous double hat-trick of wins achieved by Foden’s at the National Championship of Great Britain 1932, 33 & 34 and again in 1936, 37 & 38. This piece, a celebration of everything to do with brass band contests, proved to be the last major work for brass band that Bourgeois wrote before he passed away in September 2017. The following months saw many logistical problems overcome, new rehearsal premises secured, all whilst fulfilling the band’s busy engagement diary. Having come through all the “Trials”, Saturday 6 October 2018 saw the band’s ultimate “Triumph”, being crowned National Champion Band of Great Britain.

This album then is a musical representation of two years in the life of the band.

  4. Of Gods and Kings

    Conducted by Michael Fowles

In ancient times the relationship between kings and their gods was an uneasy one. Kings believed themselves to be gods, intermediaries between the gods and the people. Throughout history the myths and legends surrounding gods and kings have influenced writers the world over. This recording features substantial works, the composers of which have taken inspiration from such tales and stories.

Released at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 8th October, 2016.

  7. We Meet Again

My time as Musical Director of Foden's Band started in 1980, continued to the latter part of the 1990s and then restarted informally, as an occasional guest, some 10 years later. By then, I had left contesting behind and, for the first time in my life, was living without performing and writing music every day. I was, however, drawn back from time to time to arranging for my own amusement, but also to composing, something I had only done now and again, usually for a specific purpose.

In this recording, I have grouped my own pieces together to leave the arranged repertoire separate. Regarding my arrangements, even when in the thick of banding, I never arranged anything I didn't want to arrange. I need the music to tell me what to do, which I can't do with music I don't like or understand. Equally, I love the feeling of showing some new musical treasure, whether great or small, to those who have not been as lucky as I.

When asked by Foden's to make this recording of my music, I didn't hesitate. Not only is it an armchair ride to conduct the band, they are as welcoming a group as you can find. I value too, their activity in education, working with young musicians, not just locally, but in many parts of the country.

  14. Patrons' Choice V

Patrons' Choice V is dedicated to Granville Jennings who joined the band on Soprano Cornet in 1963, helping them to win the 1964 British Open Brass Band Championship under the legendary conductor, Rex Mortimer. Staying with Foden's until 1974, he moved to Royal Doulton Band, under the baton of Ted Gray (former principal cornet with Foden's) and was then enticed by a conducting position of his own at Berisford Band where he remained from 1978 until 1990. Granville then returned to his first love, Foden's Band, where he has worked alongside his friend, Jimmie Charles, with the music library ever since. Patrons' Choice V continues in similar style to the first four volumes, i.e. repertoire of an easy-listening nature and featuring the band s stunning array of soloists.

  17. A World Within - The Music of Andy Scott

British Bandsman CD of the Year 2010.

The music on this recording charts new territory for both Foden's Band and their Composer-in-Residence, Andy Scott. The association began in 2007 when Foden's principal tuba player, Les Neish commissioned Andy to write Salt of the Earth, a concerto for tuba and brass band, with funds from the Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of the composer's success in winning the Wind Band and Brass Band section of the British Composer Awards 2006. The success of this initial collaboration, and what could be described as the 'Sandbach connection' (Andy lives within walking distance of Foden's rehearsal space in the historic market town) led to Andy's appointment as the band's first ever Composer-in-Residence. This recording chronicles the first two years of this mutually inspiring partnership and the exciting new music that has resulted.

Andy Scott, an original and intuitive composer, has a playing background as a saxophonist that covers a vast array of styles although his time with Foden's is his first foray into the uniquely specialised (or equally diverse!) world of brass banding. The result is a melding of elements as diverse as the formalism of Western classical music, the sparsity of Japanese minimalism, the evocative sounds of rural British folk tunes and the rhythms of jazz, all pulled together by Foden's characteristic warm ensemble sound and dazzling virtuoso playing, taking composer, band and listener into new and richly rewarding areas.

  23. Boscombe and Foden's Live

Lieut-Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen has for many, many years used his creative gifts through musical ministry within The Salvation Army. The opportunity to premiere a brand new work, and premiere a first complete performance of another work from his hand, during his 85th year, demanded a special and unique occasion.

That came about with the partnership of the Boscombe Band of The Salvation Army and Foden's Richardson Band, along with special guest soloist Brett Baker, in the magnificent Boscombe Salvation Army Citadel, Bournemouth in February 2008.
