  3. On The Town

On The Town is a live recording of an electrifying concert given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in June 2005 by the Royal Opera House Brass Soloists. The performance opens with Bach’s stately Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, giving us an immediate feel for the depth and resonance of sound of the Ensemble. The Birth of Conchobar, an original piece by Eric Crees, the Ensemble’s director for this concert, follows. This dramatic and exciting piece gives many of the solo players an opportunity to shine. Liszt’s Prelude and Fugue on B.A.C.H. forms the centerpiece of the concert, which is rounded off with bags of razzmatazz with Bernstein’s Suite from On The Town. This stunning performance brought the house down on the day and Brass Classics is delighted to bring it to the wider public. On The Town is the first of a series of live recordings to be issued by Brass Classics over the next two years featuring flare and virtuosity of the Royal Opera House Brass Soloists.

  4. Horns on Fire

In 2007, the Swiss Brass Consort celebrated its 10th anniversary. In that time, this 10-piece brass ensemble made up of soloists, orchestra members and freelance musicians with classical and jazz backgrounds has been entertaining audiences all over Europe and beyond.

This CD of arrangements and compositions made especially for the Swiss Brass Consort demonstrates the great diversity and vitality of the group.

As a leading group of its kind, the Swiss Brass Consort continues to thrill its audiences with dynamic and unusual brass chamber music.

  5. Hodie Gloriosa (On This Glorious Day)

Hodie Gloriosa celebrates the old and the new. The repertoire brings together original music by the classical masters with classically inspired pieces by some of Britain's most distinguished contemporary composers. From Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Divertimenti for flutes and trumpets and Ludwig van Beethoven's sombre Equali for four trombones to Harrison Birtwistle's sparkling Hoquetus Petrus and Michael Berkeley's beautiful Among the Lilies, the music on this disc proves the richness and diversity of brass music, played by members of Britain's best-loved chamber orchestra.

  6. Fugue: Bach / Shostakovich

The highly acclaimed brass quintet Onyx Brass made its debut on Chandos with premier recordings of brass ensemble arrangements of fugues by Bach and Shostakovich. ‘Easily the classiest brass ensemble in Britain’, wrote BBC Music magazine. Individually, the members hold permanent principal positions in major orchestras and have come together as Onyx Brass to fill a gap in the market for performances of serious yet approachable music for brass quintet. Why Bach and Shostakovich? Well, although 200 years of history stand between the two they have much in common. Indeed, Shostakovich is reputed to have memorised Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier by the age of fifteen, and composed his own set of twenty-four preludes and fugues round the time of the Bach bicentenary in 1950. Both sets have been transcribed for many different instruments over the years but they are particularly suited to the homogenous sound of a brass ensemble.

  7. Ángel - Celebrating the music of Astor Piazzolla

Astor Piazzolla single-handedly reinvented the tango style. His music fuses together the sounds playing in Argentinian salons in the 20s and 30s with Bartokian harmonies. The result was revolutionary - an individual musical language that engages both the heart and the mind.

Many types of ensemble have tackled the music of Astor Piazzolla, such is its appeal to instrumentalists. Here, in masterful arrangements by John Hutchinson, Piazzolla's strident harmonies and heart-felt melodies are brought vividly to life in the sound of brass.

Alberti Brass, widely known for its virtuosic performance style, has endowed these enduring works with a new voice. They are joined on this disc by guitar in truly unique interpretations of the music of Piazzolla.

  8. Moviebrass

The five musicians of the Gomalan Brass Quintet come from five different Italian cities and have wide international experience with renowned orchestras. The ensemble was formed in 1999 and tackles a wide range of repertoire from Renaissance to the contemporary. In 2001, the quintet was awarded First Prize in the City of Passau International Brass Competition. The quintet appears regularly in the major concert halls and at festivals throughout Italy and has also performed in the United States of America, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Germany, Greece and Switzerland.

  9. Tribute

The word 'Tribute' can be defined as an expression of gratitude or praise: something said or given to show respect or admiration. This CD is launched to coincide with the centenary of Gilbert Vinter (1909 - 1969), who without doubt was one of the most important composers to grace the brass band movement. In addition to his groundbreaking test-piece compositions for brass band, he also contributed three chamber music gems in the form of brass quartets which appear on this recording. Also included on this recording are original quartet compositions by five other important and well respected composers. We hope that this recording will encourage other brass band musicians to perform in a chamber music setting and rekindle interest in some fine original compositions which are rarely heard today.

Eminence Brass is a brass ensemble formed in 2008 by four leading brass musicians; Richard Marshall and Philip Cobb (Cornets), Owen Farr (Tenor Horn) and David Childs (Euphonium).

  11. Heaton

The works of Wilfred Heaton have immediate originality and tower above more conventional medleys, adaptations and arrangements. The pieces chosen for this album are tuneful and catchy but, at the same time, interesting and challenging.

Royal Danish Brass' approach to and interpretation of the brass band style may seem symphonic but merely reflects its deep love for the genre and especially for the music of Wilfred Heaton. The recording was made in the large rehearsal room at the Royal Opera House, Copenhagen without a conductor.

  12. Jewels

Jewels represents the second album from Eminence Brass, a quartet formed in 2008 by four leading brass musicians; Richard Marshall and Philip Cobb (Cornets), Owen Farr (Tenor Horn) and David Childs (Euphonium).

Their first album, Tribute, featured substantial original contributions to the brass quartet repertoire while, in contrast, Jewels presents an eclectic collection of classical transcriptions, virtuosi solos and original works featuring a variety of styles.
