  3. Live!

Brass bands have a long and dsitinguished history, and the current Black Dyke Band players enjoy a history that outshines any other group. However, it must be said that Black Dyke concerts are hardly formulaic, and their performances over recent years have pushed back the conventional boundaries so far as to dazzle the eyes of many traditionalists.

Their Bridgewater Hall concert in May 2007 was a clear case in point. James Morrison and his jazz trio rub shoulders with traditional African dancers, a Yorkshire choral society and a cathedral choir. See it to believe it!

The Salvation Army's association with the Royal Albert Hall goes back many years, and the annual Gospel Arts Concert has become synonymous with this fine venue.

In 2006, the overseas visitors were the Montclair Citadel Band from New Jersey, USA who display a varied repertoire as well as backing their principal cornet player Michael Baker in his rendition on flugel horn and trumpet of 'Standing on the Promises'. Guest vocal soloist Darren Bartlett comjures up an exuberant mood with his own version of 'What a Friend' and the more tranquil 'Gethsemane'.

Support is given, as usual, by The International Staff Band ('St Magnus') and The International Staff Songsters.

This double 'DualDisc' pack enables you to choose between DVD or just audio CD. Whichever you choose, you are invited to relax and soak up the Royal Albert Hall atmosphere.

  19. The Present Age

Savour all the highlights of the annual Gospel Arts Concert presented at The Royal Albert Hall by The Salvation Army.

The exuberance of a massed youth chorus of some 500 voices, flanked the stage, providing a backdrop to a variety of performers.

19 year old Philip Cobb displays his prodigious talents in performances of 'Jubilance for Cornet and Band' and 'Virtuosity' accompanied of course by The International Staff Band. The ISB also revives Leslie Condon's much loved 'The Present Age' in addition to accompanying the youth chorus, backing, Electralyte, one of the most vibrant rock bands currently active on the Christian music scene.

The International Staff Songsters, Karen Telfer [dance] and Liam Telfer [Scripture Presentation] also feature.

  24. A History of Brass Bands - The Golden Period

The repertoire played by brass bands has altered radically over many years. However, commissioning bodies have always been governed by a desire to attract the leading mainstream composers of the day to write original material for the medium.

The so-called Golden Period, spanning the time between the Great Depression and Second World War, encapsulates this ambition at its most successful. A sequence of seminal works by John Ireland, Gustav Holst, Granville Bantock, Herbert Howells and Edward Elgar revitalised the repertoire and placed amateur musicians in a place of honour within British musical establishment.

In an illustrated lecture, Professor Nicholas Childs and Leeds Metropolitan University's partners, Black Dyke Band, place this music in a wider context, from the production of the first original brass band composition in 1913 up until the death of Elgar in 1934. This lecture was the opening event of the 2009 Black Dyke Brass Festival which took place in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University.

Following the illustrated lecture, there are in-depth interviews with eminent composers, musicologists and leading conductors discussing more specific areas and composers.
