  1. A Better Way

The One For All Big Band was founded in June 1999 and grew out of a group of Christian friends wanting to play Big Band jazz with a higher purpose than just the music itself.

The members are all either professional musicans or music teachers in the area of Perth, Western Australia. They play in a different church each month and so far have played to many different denominations, a prison and for many community events and concerts.

  3. Live!

Brass bands have a long and dsitinguished history, and the current Black Dyke Band players enjoy a history that outshines any other group. However, it must be said that Black Dyke concerts are hardly formulaic, and their performances over recent years have pushed back the conventional boundaries so far as to dazzle the eyes of many traditionalists.

Their Bridgewater Hall concert in May 2007 was a clear case in point. James Morrison and his jazz trio rub shoulders with traditional African dancers, a Yorkshire choral society and a cathedral choir. See it to believe it!

  7. Essential Dyke Volume IV - The Pondashers

The Essential Dyke Volume IV appeared in 2004 and, with the same conductor and principal soloists, reflected a more settled period in the band's history. In addition to a busy concert and contest schedule, Black Dyke Band was now producing a large number of CDs, a massive 22 in the years 2001-2004, partially due, no doubt, to the strong bonds between band and recording company. Amongst the CDs were a number dedicated to the music of a particular composer. To date these featured Arthur Butterworth, Michael Ball, Peter Graham, Wilfred Heaton (two albums) and Eric Ball, a ground-breaking sequence.

Marches recorded on Volume IV were Knight Templar (its second appearance in the series), The Pondashers specially composed for Black Dyke and dedicated to its many fans by the late Major G H Willcocks, one of the band's former highly successful professional conductors, and a celebrated transcription of Tchaikovsky's March Slav as the CDs finale. With the overture to Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Brahms€™ Academic Festival Overture the CD had a pronounced 'classical' feel and, along with Langford€™s Sullivan Fantasy and the evergreen All in the April Evening, the emphasis was very much on tradition.

2004 proved to be a good year on the contest platform, with a win in the National Brass Band Championships in the Royal Albert Hall, which was 'converted' to a further win in the European Championships in Groningen, Holland, in the following spring.

  12. Essential Dyke Volume V - Celebrate Rotary

The Essential Dyke Volume V, called 'Celebrate Rotary', was released in 2005 to coincide with the centenary of Rotary, which has links with Black Dyke through a series of high profile concerts in St. David's Hall, Cardiff. 2005 was also the year of Black Dyke Band's own 150th anniversary.

After the mainly traditional programme of Volume IV, this broke the mould slightly, with a number of modern arrangements of traditional titles, especially in the solos. Roger Webster played Schubert's beautiful Du bist die Ruh, arranged by Thomas Wyss, while David Thornton chose Auld Lang Syne in a version by Simone Mantia, a soloist in Sousa's band, but here arranged for brass by Peter Meechan, Black Dyke's Young Composer-in-Association.

The Allegro from Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto featured the tenor horn for the first time in the series. It was played by Lesley Howie who, in 1999, achieved fame as the first female member of Black Dyke Band. Another first in the series was the inclusion of a flugel horn solo, Children of Sanchez. This was far removed from tradition, and was played by John Doyle.

There was also a new piece by Peter Graham, Celebrate Rotary, included for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, tradition was never far away, with Walter Hargeaves's spectacular arrangement of Russlan and Ludmilla, and the 1812 Overture, arranged by Robert Childs.

The main change, however, was the inclusion of a major original work, Michael Ball's ...all the Flowers of the Mountain..., the work with which Black Dyke Band won the Nationals in 2004.

  13. Essential Dyke Volume VII

Essential Dyke Volume VII opened with the customary march, overture and cornet solo sequence. The march, Simoraine was composed by Clive Barraclough, with a title derived from the names of his children, Simon and Lorraine.

The name Howard Lorriman appeared with increasing regularity in Black Dyke programmes during this period and he arranged the version of Fingal€™s Cave heard here. Zelda needs no introduction and it received a characteristically sparkling performance from Richard Marshall.

From hereon, tradition took a back seat. Bill Whelan€™s Riverdance dates from 1994, whilst Capriccio belongs to the 21st century. In it, for the first time in this series, the Eb tuba comes under the spotlight, played by Joseph Cook, the band€™s flamboyant principal tuba player. Where Eagles Sing, by Dyke€™s second Young Composer-in-Residence, Paul Lovatt-Cooper (affectionately known as €˜PLC€™), concluded the middle section of the CD, which eased us into a more modern mode.

A selection from the rock ballad Music and Paul McCartney€™s Yellow Submarine took us back a generation or so, but these were separated by another new arrangement. PLC€™s version of Donegal Bay highlights further the growing recognition of the baritone, especially when in the hands of a player such as Gareth Brindle.

For the second time in the series Dr Childs included an original work. It was a live recording of the actual winning performance by Black Dyke Band in the British Open Championship of 2006, making a brilliant finale and again reflecting changes in the band€™s concert programmes.
