  1. Listening Post No. 154 review by Tim Mutum on 24/04/2018

As a solo instrument the tuba is perhaps one of the more difficult brass instruments to engage a listener for any length of time. It is a measure then of the talent of Joe Cook and the creative programme he has put together on Debut 2 that he has achieved just that.
The centre piece is the quirky and humorous Tuba Concerto No 2 from Derek Bourgeois receiving its premiere recording. Such is the inventiveness of the composer and the quality of the soloist that the 24 minutes seems to just flash by. Joe has included some fun pieces, not trivial, but engaging music such as Suite in Blue for Tuba Quartet from Roger Payne.
This disc, with its finale, The Dancing King, in which the soloist is accompanied by a CD of tuned percussion instruments, piano and synthesized bass sounds, shows just how far the tuba has come in the intervening years.
