Triumph Series Band Journal, July 2011

No. 1215 March - Merthyr Tydfil No. 34 (Paul Sharman).
This march was written at the request of Bandmaster Howard Roberts to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Merthyr Tydfil Corps, corps number 34 in The Salvation Army. The tunes used have obvious Welsh connections with 'Cwm Rhondda' and 'Aberystwyth' being featured. 'Aberystwyth' was written by Joseph Parry who lived in Merthyr Tydfil for a while.

No. 1216 Mambo - Mighty God (Steven Ponsford).
Based on words from Isaiah 9, 'Mighty God' is a song of worship and assurance by Chris Bowater and Helen and Mark Johnson. This arrangement will afford bands the opportunity to engage the audience into a lively segment of praise.

No. 1217 Song Setting - Jesus, I come (Michael Davis).
A setting of George C Stebbins' beautiful melody 'Out of my bondage'.

DVD A History of Brass Bands - The Golden Period

The repertoire played by brass bands has altered radically over many years. However, commissioning bodies have always been governed by a desire to attract the leading mainstream composers of the day to write original material for the medium.

The so-called Golden Period, spanning the time between the Great Depression and Second World War, encapsulates this ambition at its most successful. A sequence of seminal works by John Ireland, Gustav Holst, Granville Bantock, Herbert Howells and Edward Elgar revitalised the repertoire and placed amateur musicians in a place of honour within British musical establishment.

In an illustrated lecture, Professor Nicholas Childs and Leeds Metropolitan University's partners, Black Dyke Band, place this music in a wider context, from the production of the first original brass band composition in 1913 up until the death of Elgar in 1934. This lecture was the opening event of the 2009 Black Dyke Brass Festival which took place in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University.

Following the illustrated lecture, there are in-depth interviews with eminent composers, musicologists and leading conductors discussing more specific areas and composers.

1. Inaugural Lecture (Professor Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band)
2. The Beginning (Professor Nicholas Childs and Dr Robert Childs in discussion)
3. Cyfarthfa Band (Professor Philip Wilby inverviews Professor Trevor Herbert)
4. The First Harvest (Dr Roy Newsome interviews Professor Philip Wilby)
5. Growing the Repertoire (Professor Philip Wilby interviews Dr Roy Newsome)

To Set The People Free (Bruce Broughton)

The joy of freedom is the main feature expressed in this cornet duet, the title of which refers to the ringing bells of Heaven 'pealing forth the anthem of the free'. The song, 'Sweet Chiming Bells' introduces the soloists and is heard throughout as a countermelody to the variations on the main theme, 'Ring the Bells of Heaven'.

This scintillating duet was written for Ronald Waiksnoris and Lambert Bittinger of the New York Staff Band and their participation in The Salvation Army's International Congress of 1978. The piece is now available in the best of modern electronic typesetting and printing, complete with standard and optional sections for soloists of varying technical ability.

Young Crusaders (Andrew Mackereth)

This flexible arrangement for elementary players was written for the Profile Night 30 concert in 2008. That performance featured appoximately 180 young musicians from the Greater New York area. The piece can be presented as an instrumental solo, duet or double band feature. The music is based on the tune Ascalon ('Fairest Lord Jesus') but quotes respectfully from the march 'Crusaders' by Dean Goffin.

All Glorious (Dorothy Gates)

This 'opener' was written at the request of Staff Bandmaster Ronald Waiksnoris for the 2005 tour of Scandinavia by the New York Staff Band. More specifically, the requirement was for an opener that was based on a well-known church hymn and something that would have instant impact. The tune used is 'Hanover' which is often associated with the words, 'O worship the King, all glorious above'. The music is very energetic and effervescent, springing from a heart full of praise to our King for His great love for us.

The Ellacombe Chronicles (James Curnow)

This piece was commissioned by Brass Band of Columbus for the occasion of the band's 25th anniversary in 2009. It is dedicated to current and former members of the band and its founding Director, Dr Paul Droste.

The hymns of Isaac Watts (1674 - 1748) have been a source of inspiration for musical thought and development by composers for over 200 years. His glorious hymn 'I sing the mighty power of God' has been coupled with the hymn tune 'Ellacombe' in many hymnals over these two centuries.

This work was created and inspired by Isaac Watts's text and chronicles the three verses of the hymn through a set of diverse variations on the hymn tune 'Ellacombe'. The opening fanfare is intended to capture the joy and exuberance of the first phrase of the first verse, 'I sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise'. The developmental material following the fanfare gives a hint of the three large variations that are extracted from the tune.

Quick March - The Great Parade (Kenneth Downie)

This piece is intended to be a bright, sparkling concert march and features the spiritual 'I got a robe'.

The quick tempo is to encourage a performance of sparkle and wit and, at the same time, to reflect the mood of celebration in the spiritual. The song was sung by slaves to encourage them to remember that, although they might be deprived of even basic items like robes in their present plight, one day, when they get to heaven, 'all God's children got a robe'.

Aspects of Adiemus (Karl Jenkins arr. Peter Graham)

Aspects of Adiemus represents a collection from one of the world's most popular composers, Karl Jenkins. Expertly arranged by Peter Graham, the work is in five sections: Adiemus, this uplifting eponymous movement will be instantly recognisable to bands and audiences alike. Chorale - Za Ma Ba and Chorale - Vocalise are songs of sanctuary, the latter featuring a chamber group from within the band. The vibrant Song of the Spirit is a cornet feature and the finale, Song of the Plains, combines intense rhythmic energy with tribal harmonies. Recorded by Cory Band on CD (Enter the Galaxies) and DVD (Brass & Voices... and all that jazz!), Prima Vista Musikk are delighted to be able to make this superb concert suite available to all bands.

Constellations (Philip Harper)

Constellations is Philip Harper's latest 'razzmatazz' showcase for brass band and features not only the soloists, but also entire sections of the band. The piece was commissioned by Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band and the title refers to a 'group of stars'. The stellar references extend to the individual titles of the three movements of the piece: Supernova is in a funk style and features the trombones followed by the tenor horns; Stargazing is the slow section which highlights the euphoniums and baritones, then the basses; Big Dipper is the final section in big-band style which gives a chance for the cornets and the percussion to shine.
