Downloading to iPhones and iPads

Unfortunately, due to the security model on these devices, it is not possible to download files directly to an iPad, iPod, iPhone or other similar Apple device.  You will need to download your purchases to a desktop or laptop running iTunes and transfer them in the usual way,.

What is FLAC?

What is FLAC and why should I be using it?

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, and is an audio file format similar to MP3 but is completely lossless, meaning that audio is compressed without any loss in quality. The audio file which you purchase is therefore at the full quality of the original CD or better – higher quality than audio which is encoded using MP3 or AAC coding (AAC coding is used by iTunes).  Our back catalogue of recordings is now available for the first time in FLAC.  All future FLAC releases will be at higher than CD quality.

We recommend playing FLAC files in VLC media player.  VLC media player is compatible with Windows and Mac (including iPhones and iPads), and can be downloaded from:

Currently FLAC files are not compatible with iTunes.  However, in the near future, we hope to be able to offer audio in ALAC, the Apple Lossless Audio Codec format, which is fully compatible with iTunes.

On a PC, FLAC audio files can also be played in the freely downloadable Foobar2000 and Media Monkey, and also within Windows Media Player when you have installed a free downloadable plugin, which is available from the following link:

Scroll down to “Third-party Downloads” and find the section “DirectShow filters - play back ogg files in Media Player”.  You will then be able to download the Ogg Codecs for Windows. Once downloaded and installed, you will then be able to play FLAC at its original quality within Windows Media Player.

What is ALAC?

We are now pleased to offer you ALAC.  Also known as Apple Lossless, Apple Lossless Audio Codec provides you with audio files which are at the original high quality but with a smaller file size than other file types (such as WAV).

How do I play ALAC files?

To play back ALAC files, you will need an Apple device, including iPhone or iPad, but please note, you cannot download these directly using your iPhone or iPod.  These devices only support purchase from the iTunes store.  You must download onto your computer (either PC or Mac) and import into iTunes first, then you can sync your iPod/iPhone to your iTunes account etc using a cable.

What’s the difference between FLAC and ALAC?

These are both similar formats, in that they are both lossless audio codecs, meaning you retain the original quality of the recording.  However you can’t easily play FLAC in iTunes.  So if you are an iTunes user, try ALAC.  Both FLAC and ALAC will play back in VLC audio player, which you can install on your iPhone.

Is ALAC for me?

If you are a fan of Apple then definitely ALAC is for you!  It’s a winning combination of high quality audio, smaller file sizes, and the files are compatible with Apple’s iPods and iPhones.  What’s not to like?

How do I download my purchased download?

Go to “My Downloadable Products” in “My Account” and click on the title of the album to automatically download a zip file. If you have purchased individual tracks right click on the title and click save as, on a mobile device hold down the title and then press save link.
